A day after being handed a two-Test ban, Kagiso Rabada has climbed to the top spot in the ICC bowler’s rankings on Tuesday (March 13). The South Africa pacer went past James Anderson and now has career-best 902 points to his name.
Rabada picked up 5 for 96 and 6 for 54 in the Port Elizabeth Test to dismantle Australia and helped South Africa canter to an six-wicket win. In January this year, Rabada became the youngest to become the No. 1 bowler in Tests. Even back then, he went past Anderson. Rabada slipped to the second spot after South Africa’s loss to India in the third and final Test but his fiery spell helped him displace the England pacer.
AB de Villiers, who made a superb ton in the first innings, climbed up five slots and now holds the seventh spot in the rankings for batsmen.
Rabada, Anderson, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin and Josh Hazlewood form the top five bowlers while Steve Smith, Virat Kohli, Joe Root, Kane Williamson and David Warner hold the top five spots in the rankings for batsmen.
In addition, the ICC also confirmed South Africa are assured USD 500,000 as they’ll finish second in Test rankings at the April 3 cut-off date. India, who’ll continue to hold the top spot, have already been awarded USD one million in prize money and the ICC Test mace after their tour of South Africa.
