Champions League round-up: Bayern Munich romp to victory over Anderlecht in group stage opener

Bayern Munich romped to a 3-0 victory over 10-man Anderlecht to keep the heat on Paris Saint-Germain in Group B.

PSG, who thumped Celtic 5-0 in Glasgow, are one of the favourites to win the Champions League following their summer expenditure, but Bayern will do all they can to ensure they do not win the group.

Anderlecht midfielder Sven Kums was sent off after conceding the 11th-minute penalty which Robert Lewandowski netted to put Bayern ahead.

Second-half goals from Thiago and Joshua Kimmich completed a comfortable win.

Atletico Madrid secured another impressive clean sheet on the road in Europe as they held Roma to a goalless draw in Italy.

It means they are six goals off the pace in Group C following Chelsea’s 6-0 hammering of Qarabag, but time to pull it back in the race to qualify in top spot.

In Group A, CSKA Moscow were 2-1 victors over Benfica in Portugal to put them level on points with Manchester United.

Haris Seferovic put the hosts ahead but Vitinho’s spot-kick drew CSKA level before substitute Timur Zhamaletdinov netted a 71st-minute winner.

Sporting Lisbon held off a late fightback to beat Olympiacos 3-2 in Greece.

First-half goals from Seydou Doumbia, Gelson Martins and Bruno Fernandes put Sporting in control and Felipe Pardo’s brace right at the end was not enough to save Olympiacos.

Sporting trail Barcelona, who won 4-0 against Juventus, in Group D after the first matchday.
