Out of favor Indian bowler Harbhajan Singh has criticized BCCI selection committee’s selection policies after being ignored for the ICC Champions Trophy 2017. He was referring towards the selection of former India captain MS Dhoni in the squad. Harbhajan said that he doesn’t get the same ‘privileges’ in selection as MS Dhoni does when it comes to India selection.
Chief of selectors MSK Prasad said that Dhoni was selected in the team, as he brings much more than just his raw hitting ability and brilliant keeping skills to the team. He is a tactical genius and serves as a sounding board and guide to Virat Kohli during tense situations.
However, Harbhajan said to NDTV, “Yes there is no doubt that Dhoni brings a lot to the table apart from his batting, whether he is in form or not. Obviously we have seen that he is not hitting the ball as well as we have seen.”
He continued “We too have played for 19 years and won and lost India matches. I have won two World Cups too. So this privilege is for some players, and for some it is not and I’m one of those for whom this privilege is not there. I don’t know why that is the case.”
Harbhajan also criticized that both he and Gautam Gambhir were ignored for selection despite having a good IPL 10 season. Gambhir scored 498 runs, second most after David Warner, while Harbhajan’s economy of 6.48 was the best for MI, who won their 3rd IPL title, beating MS Dhoni’s team RPS in the final.
‘It is not fair to be honest. Why do we play such tournaments (like the IPL)? We play to get selected to play for India. If people are doing well. Let’s talk about Gautam Gambhir. He has the most number of runs consistently. If I talk about myself, yes, you know we all were hoping that we might be somewhere in the mix” questioned Harbhajan.
