GRANADA, Spain — Three thoughts from Real Madrid’s 4-0 victory over Granada in La Liga on Saturday.
Real Madrid’s “B squad” absolutely steamrolled a sorry Granada side 4-0 to keep Zinedine Zidane’s outfit in full control of the title race, with time now running out for chasers Barcelona.
Earlier on Saturday afternoon, Barca’s “MSN” of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez had all scored as their team beat Villarreal 4-1 to go three points clear at the top of the table (albeit with two more games played).
But Zidane stuck to his policy of resting all of Madrid’s biggest attacking names, making nine changes from the team that beat Atletico Madrid 3-0 in the Champions League in midweek, and even leaving hat-trick hero Cristiano Ronaldo resting back at home.
It once again looked the right decision as three “reserves” combined, with Alvaro Morata and Lucas Vazquez setting up James Rodriguez to open the scoring almost immediately. It was 2-0 on 11 minutes when often forgotten left-back Fabio Coentrao produced a peach of a cross and James put a bullet of a header into the back of the net.
