Landmark for Smith but Jaguars close in

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Veteran left-hander Devon Smith was keeping Windward Islands Volcanoes barely afloat with an unbeaten half-century but two-time defending champions Guyana Jaguars were closing in on victory on the second day of the final round game in the Regional four-day championship here Sunday.

Batting a second time at the Guyana National Stadium after Jaguars were dismissed for 379 in their first innings, Volcanoes were struggling on 102 for five, still 182 runs adrift of making their opponents bat again.

Smith was unbeaten on 60, an innings that has so far spanned 110 deliveries and nearly 2-1/4 hours and included seven fours and a six.

The 35-year-old also went past 600 runs for the season and passed 12 000 career first class runs.

Volcanoes were cruising at 67 for one behind a 42-run, second wicket stand between Smith and Jerlani Robinson (18) but lost four wickets for 33 runs to collapse.

Left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie took two wickets for three runs.

Earlier, Jaguars benefitted from Steven Jacobs’s 61 and Keemo Paul’s 46, as they build a substantial 284-run first innings lead.

Assad Fudadin, unbeaten on 113 overnight, was dismissed for 125 off 189 balls in 4-1/4 hours with 15 fours and two sixes.

His dismissal triggered a slide where five wickets tumbled for 23 runs but Jacobs and Paul revived the innings in a stellar 85-run, eighth wicket stand.

Left-arm seamer Delorn Johnson finished with five for 46 while the ever-improving left-arm pacer Kyle Mayers took four for 89.
